INNOVATION IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR

Innovation is often understood as a phenomenon that takes place in the private sector in order to enhance competitiveness. However, the global financial crisis highlighted a strong need for an efficient and cost-minimizing public sector that fosters innovation.

IKU has organized a workshop to discuss how and which kind of innovations in the public sector can promote economic and social welfare in any country and in Europe as a whole. How European states, the EU itself, and the OECD will monitor and enhance innovation performance in the public sector in the future? These topics are highly relevant for the new EU Member States and it is also a field of further developments in the old Member States too.

These and other related questions were discussed at the workshop on ?Innovation in the Public Sector? which took place in Budapest, on the 27th and 28th of May 2010, supported by NKTH. The event was part of the preparatory phase of the Hungarian EU Presidency and the topic hopefully will remain on the official agenda of the forthcoming Polish Presidency.
